Washington State-based electric aircraft manufacturer, Eviation, announced on Aug. 2 that it has appointed Seattle-based aerospace engineering company TLG Aerospace for the design of the production configuration of the all-electric Alice commuter plane.

The announcement marks a significant step on the Alice’s path to certification.

Powered by two magniX magni650 electric propulsion units and equipped with an advanced battery system, Eviation’s nine-seat Alice aircraft is capable of operating with zero carbon emissions and lower operating costs when compared to conventional light jets or high-end turboprops.

The all-electric aircraft has a maximum operating speed of 260 knots, and is expected to cover routes ranging from 150 to 250 miles upon entry into service. Eviation has noted that the Alice features an “endlessly upgradeable” battery system, hinting at the potential for extended range as battery technology continues to advance.

Since its initial unveiling at the 2019 Paris Air Show, the Alice aircraft has achieved several notable milestones, including its maiden flight, which took place in September 2022, and an order book that has surpassed US$4 billion.

TLG and Eviation will begin design work on the production configuration of the Alice aircraft, which is expected to be available in a nine-seat passenger version, a six-seat executive cabin configuration, and an eCargo version.

As the partnership with TLG Aerospace takes shape, Eviation is also working towards certification flight tests of the Alice, with plans to include three aircraft in its flight test fleet.

“Establishing the production configuration of the Alice aircraft is a significant step on Alice’s path to certification,” noted Eviation CEO Gregory Davis. “We are excited to work with the expert engineering team at TLG Aerospace to take Alice into this next stage of bringing zero carbon, cost-effective, and convenient air travel to the market.”

TLG Aerospace brings substantial expertise to the collaboration, with the ability to support the entire aircraft design cycle from product development to certification. The company’s team of over 75 engineers, including five FAA Designated Engineering Representatives (DERs), have experience with more than 100 aircraft types from over 40 different manufacturers.

Steve Muenzberg, CEO of TLG Aerospace, said: “Alice is an innovative, beautifully designed plane and a vital solution to reduce the aviation industry’s carbon emissions. At TLG Aerospace, we are committed to supporting the aviation industry’s transition to sustainability, and working with Eviation’s Alice is a tremendous opportunity to contribute to this critical initiative.”

Looking ahead, Eviation aims to commence its certification test program around 2025, with first deliveries anticipated by 2027.
