Air Canada has signed a firm order with Airbus for five more latest generation single-aisle A220-300s on the fifth anniversary since taking delivery of its first A220 in December 2019.

This follows an initial order in 2016 for 45 A220-300s and a reorder in 2022 for 15 more. Including this latest reorder, Air Canada’s total firm orders for the A220-300 stands at 65 aircraft.

John Di Bert, executive vice-president and chief financial officer at Air Canada, said: “The A220 has delivered on its promises for Air Canada in its five years in service. It has allowed us to open new routes and better serve existing routes with an aircraft that has the right economics to support our profitable growth strategy. It is also very popular with customers. We are pleased to add an additional five of these aircraft, built in Mirabel, Quebec, right up the road from our Montreal headquarters and to further support Canada’s aerospace sector.”

Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP sales, Commercial Aircraft, at Airbus, said: “This is Air Canada’s third order for the A220 in a few years. We are committed to working closely with the flag carrier as we support its fleet renewal programme. The A220 is the most efficient aircraft in its size category, offering superior comfort with a spacious cabin and the range to fly numerous destinations on the carrier’s network.”

Air Canada was the A220-300 launch operator in North America in January 2020 and has since operated its A220 fleet to more than 70 destinations. The A220 is assembled in Mirabel, being an essential part of the renowned Canadian aerospace sector.

Combining the longest range, lowest fuel consumption and widest cabin in its class, the A220 is the most modern airliner in its size category, carrying between 100 to 150 passengers on flights of up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km).

The aircraft is powered by Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation GTF engines and offers a 25 percent reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions per seat. As with all Airbus aircraft, the A220 is already able to operate with up to 50 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Airbus aims for all its aircraft to be capable of operating with up to 100 percent SAF by 2030.

As of the end of November 2024, Air Canada’s fleet is made of 134 Airbus aircraft, including the A320 Family aircraft, the A330 Family aircraft and the A220-300 aircraft. Air Canada has an order for 26 A321XLRs.

As at the end of November 2024, Airbus had received close to 900 orders from 32 customers for the A220, of which almost 380 have been delivered. The A220 is already in successful service with 23 operators worldwide. The fleet is currently flying on more than 1,500 routes and more than 460 destinations across the globe.

The post Nav Canada to implement proposed service charge changes appeared first on Skies Mag.

]]>
Nav Canada announced it will proceed with its proposal to change customer service charges consistent with the Notice issued Sept. 20, 2024.

Context

On Jan. 1, 2024, Nav Canada implemented an average net decrease in service charges of 5.57 percent consisting of a Base Rate decrease averaging 9.33 percent and a new Temporary Rate averaging 3.76 percent to recover the Rate Stabilization Account (RSA) shortfall over a five-year period.

Since that rate change was implemented, continuing downside uncertainties for the aviation industry necessitated a downward adjustment to our medium-term air traffic forecast. Taking this revised forecast into account, the budgeted growth in costs in fiscal 2025, which are due in large part to investments in operational training and staffing, is projected to exceed revenue generated by the volume of air traffic. This necessitates an increase in Base Rates.

As a partially mitigating factor, cost management efforts and higher than planned other revenue in fiscal 2024, enabled Nav Canada to allocate a portion of the recovery of its RSA to partially offset the impact on service charge rates in fiscal 2025.

Revised Service Charges

The revised service charges have two components: (i) a Base Rate adjustment to recover Nav Canada’s anticipated fiscal 2025 costs less a portion of the RSA surplus in fiscal 2024, by service; and (ii) an average Temporary Rate decrease to reduce the amount of the historical RSA shortfall to be recovered in fiscal 2025.

The overall average net increase in service charges of 3.73 percent includes an average Base Rate increase of 4.99 percent and an average Temporary Rate decrease of 26.73 percent compared to existing rates.

The rate adjustments vary by service category, depending on how much the revenue generated by each charge deviates from its breakeven level for fiscal 2025 after reflecting a portion of the higher than planned RSA recovery in fiscal 2024, as well as how much it has contributed to the remaining RSA shortfall balance. These revised charges will become effective on January 1, 2025 except as otherwise noted.

The proposal to revise charges was released on September 20, 2024 and Nav Canada provided 60 days to receive representations from users.

Details of Nav Canada’s revised service charges are available here

]]>
Conair Group Inc. (Conair) announced the company has now converted 20 Dash 8-400 aircraft into aerial firefighters to fight wildfires, with 15 converted and delivered in the last four years alone.

This production rate is unmatched around the world by producers of large land-based airtankers or large water scooping aircraft. Demand for the aircraft is strong, with all Dash 8-400AT and Dash 8-400MRE, the multi role variant, being purchased or placed on long term contract by government agencies as the aircraft is completed.

“We have been building the airtanker for nearly 20 years,” shares Michael Benson, director, business development at Conair.

Jeremy Ulloa Photo

“We began production in 2005 delivering the first multi role airtanker to the French Government. Since then, year over year we have steadily built and deployed these modern airtankers, in both the multi role and airtanker-only capacity, building our customers’ response ability and modernizing aging firefighting fleets, ensuring the emergency aircraft is ready to respond when needed and not grounded due to repair, lack of parts or obsolescence. In the last four years, we have seen demand surge, driven by increasing numbers of wildfires and fires that are more extreme. Jurisdictions that needed to complement their current fleet with a new tool, are doing so. And agencies that haven’t yet secured a fleet of their own aircraft, are making inquiries.”

France owns and operates eight Dash 8-400MRE, the world’s first multi role large airtanker, heading into its 20th year of operation. Capable of transporting passengers, cargo and critically ill patients, the fleet deploys to fight wildfires plus responds to crises, shipping critical supplies and teams during periods of war or natural disaster.

Conair Photo

Saskatchewan ordered two Dash 8-400MRE in 2024, along with two Dash 8-400AT, the first of which will be delivered for the 2025 fire season. Australia, Alaska, Washington, British Columbia, and Alberta have all added Dash 8-400AT to their response capability.

“In 2025 we plan to deliver three additional Dash 8 airtankers for the fire season” adds Bertrand Lamaison, director, engineering and customer support. “It takes a long time to engineer, build, certify and deliver a new airtanker type. We have gone through that period of development and have streamlined our processes to maximize our production efficiency. The Dash offers decades of proven operational capability, plus advanced technologies that improve safety and effectiveness.”

“We see the Dash as a solution for government agencies who are looking to bridge the gap between immediate need and delivery of their CL515 orders in the future, mitigating risk while adding another response capability to their arsenal, that being retardant” continues Benson. “Water and retardant work together on extreme fires, each performing its own role. Water cools flames, requiring a continuous rotation of drops to get ahead of evaporation, while retardant is placed once around the perimeter of the fire to slow its progression, coating the vegetation to be effective even after its water
has evaporated. Water scoopers and land-based airtankers are a comprehensive and efficient team and have been used together for decades by agencies prone to fire, such as in Canada and the U.S.”

Conair Photo

Conair manufactures aerial firefighting aircraft by converting commercial aircraft into airtankers. These airtankers are sold to governments or placed on long-term operational contract. Conair also owns and operates their own diverse fleet of aerial firefighting aircraft, the largest fixed-wing fleet in the world, including CL415 water scoopers, Fire Boss water scoopers, Dash 8-400AT airtankers, RJ85 airtankers, and AT802 airtankers, plus command and control bird dog lead planes.

Diamond Aircraft announced a deal with Air India for the acquisition of three new twin-engine DA42-VI aircraft – with an option for six more – for Air India’s new Flight Training Organization (FTO) in Amravati, Maharashtra.

This order marks the start of Diamond Aircraft’s cooperation with India’s flag carrier airline. Delivery of the first plane is anticipated in summer 2025.

“We are thrilled to play such a vital role in Air India’s drive to become entirely self-sufficient in training new pilots for its expanding fleet. We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership,” said Jane Wang, director of sales, marketing, and flight ops at Diamond Aircraft Austria.

“The DA42-VI is designed to make transitioning from single- to multi-engine aircraft training much easier, and Air India’s future cadets will benefit from this. The glass cockpit will help prepare them for their future careers flying large commercial jets,” continued Wang.

The four-seat DA42-VI is the newest version of Diamond’s industry-leading, twin-engine piston plane. Ideal for pilot training, its jet-fuel powerplant generates fuel savings of up to 50 percent compared to conventional AVGAS-powered twins, and its panoramic canopy provides excellent visibility during flight manoeuvres.

“We are excited to partner with Diamond Aircraft as we set up India’s first airline-owned and operated cadet pilot school. We see this as the beginning of a partnership with Diamond to support Air India’s vision to strengthen the aviation training ecosystem in India and become self-reliant,” said Sunil Bhaskaran, director, Aviation Academy, Air India.

Air India’s pilot school will be officially opened in the second half of 2025 as South Asia’s largest flight school, training around 180 pilots each year. It will be equipped with digitally enabled classrooms, a digitized operations center, and its own maintenance facility to elevate operational efficiency. The DA42 will come into play as cadets progress to multi-engine flight training.

SkyAlyne, a joint venture between CAE and KF Aerospace, and Bluedrop Training & Simulation, jointly announced the successful signing of a 25-year contract.

The contract confirms Bluedrop’s support of SkyAlyne in delivering the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Future Aircrew Training (FAcT) program.

“Building and then delivering the Future Aircrew Training program to the RCAF is a monumental undertaking, which requires top-level expertise and know-how, which is why it is so important to have Bluedrop part of Team SkyAlyne,” said Kevin Lemke, general manager of SkyAlyne.

“As SkyAlyne works on military aircrew training solutions, it’s important that our team is made up of the best companies, with strong track records of success, from all across Canada.”

The FAcT program is the RCAF’s next-generation aircrew training program, which combines three separate training programs into one. The FAcT program includes training all RCAF Pilots, Air Combat Systems Officers (ACSOs) and Airborne Electronic Sensor Operators (AES OPs) to Wings Standard. The program will become operational over the coming years.

Bluedrop is a Halifax-based business with a strong history of contributions to RCAF training, including years of experience supporting the Contracted Flying Training and Support (CFTS) program, led by KF Aerospace and multiple programs with CAE, including fixed-wing search and rescue (FWSAR) and operational training systems provider (OTSP) among others.

Bluedrop’s involvement in the FAcT program is a natural extension of this collaboration with CAE and KF Aerospace to deliver industry-leading training material to the RCAF.

“As a small/medium enterprise, it is a tremendous opportunity to be a part of Team SkyAlyne and the FAcT program for the coming 25-years. Our team at Bluedrop provides exceptional know-how and superior levels of support to our customers,” explained Derrick Rowe, CEO, Bluedrop Training & Simulation.

“The future of aircrew training increasingly includes simulation, virtual reality, and augmented reality systems. Bluedrop is positioned to advance the program and maintain relevance for the long-term.”

Bluedrop’s contributions to SkyAlyne in this contract includes provision and configuring of software components, development and continuous improvement of courseware in Moose Jaw and Southport, and providing maintenance technicians in Moose Jaw.

The Government of Canada officially awarded the FAcT program contract to SkyAlyne in late May 2024. SkyAlyne’s solution for the FAcT program includes expertise from a number of leading Canadian companies, including Bluedrop. Formalizing agreements between SkyAlyne and its subcontractors is an important step in moving the program forward.

“Momentum is growing as the FAcT program moves forward,” added Lemke. “It’s exciting to see the entire team coming together, all working to ensure Canada has the best trained aircrew in the world.”

CJ Aerospace orders King Air grease-free polymer flap roller kits as demand soars https://skiesmag.com/press-releases/cj-aerospace-orders-king-air-grease-free-polymer-flap-roller-kits-as-demand-soars/ https://skiesmag.com/press-releases/cj-aerospace-orders-king-air-grease-free-polymer-flap-roller-kits-as-demand-soars/#respond Wed, 18 Dec 2024 14:04:55 +0000 https://skiesmag.com/?post_type=press-releases&p=360350 Canada’s Marsh Brothers Aviation has secured a contract to supply its new King Air Flap Roller Kit to what it said is Australia’s leading aircraft spare parts distributor.

The post CJ Aerospace orders King Air grease-free polymer flap roller kits as demand soars appeared first on Skies Mag.

]]>
Canada’s Marsh Brothers Aviation has secured a contract to supply its new King Air Flap Roller Kit to what it said is Australia’s leading aircraft spare parts distributor.

Marsh Brothers Aviation (MBA) has reached a milestone agreement with Sydney-based CJ Aerospace to supply retrofit kits for installation at two maintenance facilities. These kits will replace the greased original flap roller bearings on two King Air 200/300 series aircraft. Each kit comprises 16 rollers.

The Beechcraft King Air is one of Australia’s most popular turboprop aircraft, with the Royal Australian Air Force, Royal Flying Doctor Service, police, and other government agencies all favouring the airplane.

CJ Aerospace owner Craig Jones said: “The growth in demand for King Air aircraft in Australia has increased largely due to the aircraft’s all-weather flexibility and potential to perform a diverse range of roles. However, the original greased roller bearings in the wing flaps do not respond too well to changes in altitude temperature, causing moisture ingress and corrosion.”

King Air operators frequently experience problems with their greased flap roller bearings due to the loss of, or dried-out, lubricating grease resulting in reliability and performance issues. To combat this, Textron changed the AMM to increase the inspection interval to three years or 3,000 landings.

“By replacing existing grease-needle type roller bearings and phenolic washers with the self-lubricating, grease-free polymer material from Marsh Brothers, King Air operators can significantly reduce maintenance costs, improving aircraft availability,” said Jones.

MBA manager, business development, Juan Rivera, said: “This contract award is a significant development for Australian King Air operators. We are delighted that CJ Aerospace has agreed to trial the King Air Roller Kit. This opportunity allows us to collect comprehensive data from aircraft flying daily in a unique environment. It helps to validate the expected performance of the rollers and builds confidence around the product.”

The flap roller upgrade kit is a proactive solution that eliminates flap roller bearing seizure and minimizes wear of the aircraft flap tracks.

By eliminating the roller greasing requirement with a self-lubricating bearing system, the rollers are maintenance-free by design, increasing the time between maintenance while reducing overall costs associated with replacement and repair of flap system components.

“Craig and his team at CJ Aerospace are aware of the issues King Air operators face with grease-reliant rollers and are keen for their customers to benefit from a self-lubricated roller. The company has good experience with our Aerostar and brake master cylinder re-seal kits and decided to add the King Air Flap Roller Kit to the list.”

The decision by CJ Aerospace to trial the roller kit follows Transport Canada’s (TC) July approval of the polymer bearing technology for commercial use.

The Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and Transport Canada have a bilateral agreement in place that allows Australian operators to use MBA’s King Air Roller Kit.

“CJ Aerospace is committed to securing its position as one of the premier aviation parts distributors in the world,” said Jones. “With a state-of-the-art warehouse dedicated solely to aircraft parts warehousing and distribution, we strive to ensure our customers have constant access to quality parts and servicing when and where required. We understand what is needed to optimize aircraft reliability and availability and a Marsh Brothers inventory can play a significant role in that.”

CJ Aerospace is a member of the Aviation Distributors and Manufacturers Association (ADMA), the association for distributors and manufacturers of aviation parts, components and supplies.
