Just amazing.

I just wish that Air Canada could attack its Toronto YYZ operational issues and customer service issues with the same fervour that it applies to its fleet and network planning.

Comment on Canadians and the legendary Dambusters Raid by David Skehan https://skiesmag.com/news/canadians-legendary-dambusters-raid/#comment-377497 Sun, 15 Dec 2024 03:21:13 +0000 https://skiesmag.com/?post_type=news&p=295739#comment-377497 My mother’s second husband was a ball turret gunner in a dam buster. His name was Robert Stewart, originally from Canada. He passed in 2010 on October 29th. He and I spoke in detail about his service career, since I was in the us army myself. He was horribly affected with ptsd because of what they did. I’d like to know what plane he flew in. So I can put the stories in a more linear context. If anyone has ants his stories, just contact me

Other than that? It’s a great place for cargo and maybe a friend (close friend hopefully despite the fairly generous cabin.) I wonder how many are going to actually take up the “turboprop conversion” and get a better 370-400hp at 32000 feet? Might be a good conversion plane if the price is right for a used, low hours model. This brings back WAY too many visions of the Cessna P 210 Centurion. Anybody remember that PITA? Climb was a prayer and chant ritual, running hot was your responsibility, and don’t get me started with ice. And the pressurization boot seal? Ugh, even the mechanics hated it. All for maybe on a good day 200ktas flat as pane of glass and level at 20k. Imagine a plane that hates you for daring to fly it?

They would pass through here and pickup passengers on their way to Hawaii. This was in 1955 – 1956. Biggest airplane I ever saw and wondered how it ever got in the air.

Ridiculous rightwing BS trolling. The Mars outlived their usefulness and the economics of using turbine and jet water bombers cost far less than using a maintenance hungry, spares limited 80 year old aircraft. But you do your Trumpy crap if it makes you feel better.

Comment on EcoPulse hybrid-electric aircraft demonstrator completes flight test campaign by Alex Kovnat https://skiesmag.com/press-releases/ecopulse-hybrid-electric-aircraft-demonstrator-completes-flight-test-campaign/#comment-376806 Tue, 10 Dec 2024 17:36:39 +0000 https://skiesmag.com/?post_type=press-releases&p=360199#comment-376806 What I gather is, the hybrid system mentioned above is like the long-familiar Diesel-electric railroad locomotive principle of a prime mover connected mechanically to a generator or alternator, which in turn provides electric power to multiple traction motors. This works well for locomotives, because mechanical transmission of power from the engine to the drive axles would be too complex and troublesome. But the series-hybrid configuration suffers the disadvantage in that overall efficiency of this arrangement is the product of the efficiencies of the generator/alternator and drive motors. For airplanes, it may be better to use a parallel-hybrid configuration whereby the engine drives the propeller directly, but with an electric machine on the driveline. Said electric machine would function as a motor to assist takeoff, or as a generator to provide for the aircraft’s electric power needs.

I liken this retirement to a political decapatation. You may recall the Princess Marguerite. Dave Barrett sent that ship to the breakers with one swipe of the pen. Even though keeping her running on that route for certain meant massive tourism benefits for BC. Americans wanted her to stay as well as Canadian tourists but no sir not the NDP. Mars water bombers were an incomparable asset to BC Tourism, Environmental, and Forestry business. At the time Princess Marguerite was axed due to ICBC debt balances. History repeats itself. Mars AirTankers were axed because of ICBC, BC Hydro, Health BC, BC Ferries (to name a few) debt servicing. The problem with Socialism is what to do when you’ve finished spending other people’s money. The CF-18 Hornet demo team gave the RCAF a high profile which will be greatly reduced by this move.

Comment on YVR closes north runway after cargo plane skids into muddy ground  by Tony Brett https://skiesmag.com/news/yvr-closes-north-runway-after-cargo-plane-skids-into-muddy-ground/#comment-374112 Sat, 23 Nov 2024 20:41:37 +0000 https://skiesmag.com/?post_type=news&p=359774#comment-374112 Your magazine gives a nice coverage of the RCAF for its 100 year anniversary but with one glaring omission – the years of the CF-101. From the mid ’60’s to 1985 this aircraft was Canada’s contribution to NORAD and it and the CF-104 in Europe were the only two nuclear armed aircraft in the RCAF, with the exception of the Bomarc. I flew the 101 for 7 years – 4 operationally and 3 instructing. I don’t know why but the F-101 always get very little mention. That’s my little gripe.
